THE PLACES WE WENT TO
The port of Hammerfest. I haven't been here, in fact to tell the truth I don't know were it is!! Anyone?
A bucolic scene from the River Elbe going in to Bremen. I can only remember the nice beer and the nicer girls in the bars. Those German sausages, that you used to get with loverly chips and a big dollop of mayonnaise were nice too! Above the old Genoa and below the new. I have some happy and some blank memories of here from my days on the Medi boats

The new part of and entrance to Dunkirk. Note the the wind Turbines. I have recently travelled France and the Netherlands and both countries place these wind turbines in noisy and industrial places like along motorways and around the docks. I suppose the theory is the noise of the turbines is masked by the everlasting noise of the surroundings. A damn good idea I say, better than putting them in the quiet of the countryside.
I never went here but it sounds an interesting place.

These fellows are Durban Rickshaw Boys in 1948, friends of Des Jenkins (NZ Des) who sent in these 10 or so pictures. Gawd you wouldn't want to meet them on a dark night especially going back to the ship pissed.
Bahrain now!!! it looks like Disneyland now, a far cry from the Abadan Blues days.
Downtown Rangoon in the late 50's I think, never went here either, what was it like all you BI men?
Copenhagen or as they say now Kobenhagen or someting like that I never went there. It was mostly you east coast fellas, Geordies and the like. Any stories?
Above - remember Curacao for bunkers! This is the main street in the town our ships used to pass through to get to the bunkering basin. In the foreground is the swing bridge across the channel.
Above- an aerial shot of the town showing the swing bridge we knew and the much newer high level bridge.
Above- The other end of the Sharpness Canal - Gloucester. The tall warehouses in the centre of the docks are the home of the British Waterways Museum that has on display the Vindi's old Figurehead. Prominent in the top centre is the Cathedral. Cape Town Castle in Durban 1957
Above - one of the famous Valetta Garrys - I don't know how to spell their correct name-anyone please.

During the 1960/? Seamen's strike - a bunch of Ellermans Medi boats in Langton Dock Liverpool
The famous swing bridge that carries another canal over the Manchester Ship Canal
St Johns - Newfoundland, looking cold and bleak - as it often is
Above Table Mountain bright and clear -Cape Town harbour below.
Alcatraz Penitentiary- San Francisco.
Newport in south west Wales - An old photo from the 30's - The steel works, the chimneys, the smoke have all gone now as have the coal mines in the valleys - they all lasted just 100 years.
Rio de Janeiro - what a great place for a run ashore!
Istanbul - another great run ashore
The famous 'Vines' pub in Liverpool
Old photo of Birkenhead docks entrance off the Mersey
Another old photo of Duke bridge leading into Duke dock Birkenhead

Aden - for bunkers and 1000 chipping hammers on the ship's side! Looks like a BI boat there.
Hobart 1950 - the Red Ensign in full swing here! Happy memories, I had my first Knee Trembler here!
Wellington 1953 - lots o' Loverly ships! Singapore 1952 a full house of Blue Funnel boats!!
Gibraltar from the air - a series of modern photos. I remember an awful lot of girls in the bars here but no sex! Must have been all the Grey Funnel Line fellows hogging it?
The 'Rock'
Looking down on part of the docks
One of those famous apes - on lookout!
The 'Famous' highway across the airport runway. Did you ever get a run ashore across here into Spain?
